What makes these literary Westerns?
Literary Western fiction uses the familiar materials of the genre (land, distance, weather, law, work, violence, silence) but places its weight on aftermath. The question is less who wins and more what remains after a decision has been made.
Across this archive, the West is not decoration. It is a force that shapes labor, memory, responsibility, and survival. Some stories are set on the nineteenth-century frontier. Others move into the twentieth century, where Western landscapes still press on families, towns, and people who inherited old systems without choosing them.
