Arizona Territory, 1908. Nathan Cooper comes home to help his mother sell the place his father, Kane Cooper, left without a will. The stove is already sold. His sister has rehung the kitchen door. And in the bottom of an old chest he finds his father’s Colt Navy, wrapped in blue flannel, empty, just as it was handed to him ten years before.

Kane hauled freight, kept his mules, and said almost nothing about the war. He was at Picacho Pass in the spring of 1862. Which side he was on, he never told his son.

On a railroad gang below the pass, Nathan meets a family who remember a young man walking out of the brush with his hands open, asking for water in the wrong words, and a debt that took thirty years to pay.

With a buyer waiting, the summer rains coming, and his sister still carrying three years of work he never saw, Nathan has to decide what he owes the living, and what his father was trying to hand him.
